WHAT MAKES ONE TO BE A

‘CHILD OF THE DEVIL’?

Some have taught that Cain was a ‘son’ of satan. Cain was not the son of satan.

In Genesis 4:1 we read:
‘And Adam knew his wife, and she conceived and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord."

Eve assumed that this one was the promised Seed of Genesis 3:15, but she was incorrect. Yet, it obvious from Scripture that we are taught that Cain is a child of Adam and Eve.

An ancient history book, mentioned twice in the Bible (Joshua and Samuel both used and quoted from it) says that Cain and Abel were part of quintuplets (Jasher 1:12-14). There is no mention of Eve and Satan having sexual relations.

John mentions Cain in I John 3:12:
‘Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s were righteous."

What made Cain of the devil then, was his ‘evil works’, not a genetic link to the devil. The word for ‘evil’ in that verse is the Greek word ‘poneros’ meaning ‘evil that causes labor, pain, sorrow, one that causes harm.’ It obviously does refer to satan, but does not mean that satan was Cain’s biological father. The devil’s ways are ‘wicked’ and evil, and when Cain chose to have those same kind of ‘evil’ works, he chose to have the spiritual father we call the ‘devil.

Rather, note I John 3:8, where the same writer says ‘he that committeth sin is of the devil, for the devil sinneth from the beginning." So, Cain was ‘of that wicked one’ because his deeds were evil, not because the devil was his literal father, and not Adam.

To be saved and become a child of God, John explains one must ‘keep His commandments."

1 John 2:3-5 (KJV)

3 And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.

4 He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him.

5 But whoso keepeth His word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him.

Our relationship with God is brought about by ‘grace’, and it is then proven with good works that follow, proving the coming into the family of God. It is a spiritual choice for the Adamic race. We are not good because we are related to Adam through Seth, nor evil due to being related to Adam through Cain. We are good or evil due to our choice to serve the Lord Jesus or not. Our salvation is not based on genetics, but on salvation in Jesus. The original sin was disobedience in eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. There was no sexual union with Eve and the devil, no child named ‘Cain’ was born from that imagined union. That whole scenario is wickedly conceived by some who want to justify their bias, prejudice, and bigotry. Their hatred blinds their eyes to truth, and their evil deeds prove they have not God as their ‘Father’. That is due to their choice, though, not their genetics.

What made Cain a child of the devil was not genetics, but it was disobedience. We are told much about ‘children of the devil’.

The children of the devil are the ones who:

1. walk in darkness
1 John 1:5-6 (KJV)

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

2. say one has no sin
1 John 1:8-10 (KJV)

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

3. hate anyone

1 John 2:9 (KJV)

9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

1 John 3:10-19 (KJV)

10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

4. fail to overcome satan
1 John 2:13-14 (KJV)

13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known Him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known Him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

5. love the world and the things in it
1 John 2:15-17 (KJV)

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1 John 4:15 (KJV)

15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

6. murder
1 John 3:12-15 (KJV)

12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.

15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

7. have no personal relationship with God
1 John 4:7-10 (KJV)

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

8. not make confession of Jesus
1 John 4:14-16 (KJV)

14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Those are the ones who, according to John’s epistle, are children of the devil. This explains how John comes to call Cain to be ‘of that wicked one’. John, nor any other part of the Bible taught that one was wicked due to genetic relationship with Cain, but due to choices in life similar to those of Cain.

I John 3:10
In this, the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil; whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.’

I John 4:7
"...everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God."

I John 4:15
"Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him and he in God."
