WHO BATTLES THIS ARMOR WE WEAR?
The doctrines that are spread and propagated in the last days, do not normally come from the unclean spirits just described. There is another kind of demon, that does this work more insidiously. The Bible calls them ‘familiar spirits’. There are many kinds of them, and we end up dealing with them on a more frequent basis. They are the sly, subtle, hide their sins under a veil of religiousness kind of demons. They suggest evil, and encourage such, but do it in a way that makes the victim think they are being righteous.
We call them many names:
‘false doctrinal demons’
"Jannes and Jambres demons’
"Lying and discord demons’
‘Jealousy and envy demons’
The words ‘familiar spirits’ is from the Hebrew, "owb". It refers to the mumble that comes from a water skin bottle, due to the sound of air escaping from it. When squeezed, to check if a bottle that looks full of water, a sound would emerge, from the emission of air trapped in the bottle. This terminology was used to refer to demon spirits, that were unseen from the outside, but when pressured, a sound would emerge, indicating their presence.
In that time, the ones with demons were often called ‘mediums’, and they would speak the message of demons, imitate the dead for the demons, promote doctrines for the demons, and make predictions for the demons. Often, they would seek to not let it be known, that demons were the ones giving them the messages. But as a waterskin bottle emits a sound, when air is forced out of where it should not have been, so the mediums emit words that give away the demonic presence.
People with familiar spirits, will give away the fact that spirits are within (possession), or at work from without (obsession)
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits..."
Familiar spirits are evil, but often try to appear good, counterfeiting goodness, trying to be accepted. They will usually try to hide their presence, and the people they use, will often not even realize their presence.
But when familiar spirits are detected, when discerned, we are commanded to not even ‘regard’ them. "Regard’ comes from the Hebrew word, ‘panah’ meaning ‘to face , to turn and look at directly..."
We are not to want to be in the presence of such ones, that are being exploited of a familiar spirit.
"And the soul that turneth after such that have familiar spirits,
and after wizards (male witches), to go a whoring after them, I will even set My face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people."
God sounds quite adamant about this, and yet, we find that Christianity today has come to tolerate many who act in harmony with familiar spirits, who allow obsession of the familiar spirits upon them. With such harsh directives from the Lord, we need to re-examine who familiar spirits are, and make sure we do not ‘regard’ such as have them.
"There shall not be found among you, any one that is a charmer, a consulter of familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer......
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord..."
When Saul could not get God to answer his questions, due to Saul’s evil nature, Saul decided to question evil spirits. So he said..
"Seek me a woman, that hath a familiar spirit..." (I Samuel 28:3-25, vs. 7).
A demon showed up, impersonating Samuel, and a judgment fell upon Saul, the next day, he and his sons died in battle, and the main reason for judgment then, was his consulting, dealing with this ‘familiar spirit’.
Manasseh ‘dealt with a familiar spirit’... (II Kings 21:6)
Josiah had the workers who had familiar spirits ‘put away’ (II Kings 23:24).
There are many kinds or divisions
of familiar spirits.
False doctrinal spirits
These spirits try to hide themselves within, or obsessing upon, people, so as to bring false doctrines into the faith. We are warned that in the last days this will be more prevalent...
I Timothy 4:1
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times, some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. Speaking lies in hypocrisy, ... Conscience seared with a hot iron... Forbidding to marry... Commanding to abstain from meats..."
False doctrines often have their origin from demon spirits. False teachings are often inspired by demons, with the twisting of Scriptures, providing dreams and visions, and imitation prophetic words given in moments of pretend inspiration.
I John 4:1-6
"Beloved, believe not every spirit (speaking of spiritual utterance) but try the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone into the world..."
We must try and test all visions, of ourselves, or of others. Many have visions, but not all visions are from God. They may seem spiritual, may seem religious, but all visions must be tested. All prophetic words, esp. in these last days, must be tested and verified by the Word of God, and the witness of the Spirit.
These familiar spirits will give miracles to some, to get people to believe that the one sporting the miracles if from God.
"For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles..."
II Thessalonians 2:8-12
"...whose coming is after the working of satan with all power, and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivable-ness of unrighteousness."
Miracles are given to people preaching false doctrines. Surely, God does send miracles to true prophets and saints, but, we must test miracles to determine their origin. God does many miracles, but not all miracles are of God.
The magicians of Egypt, did miracles. They did some of the same miracles as shown by Moses, their rods turned to serpents also...
Etc... So, the fact of their miracles did not make them true prophets, they were still false.
In the last days, the devil will seek to deceive even the elect, if possible. We must discern when miracle spirits are at work. The doctrines of the person being used and given miracles, need to be examined with the Word of God. The Holy Spirit needs to be spoken with, and we need to listen for verification, or rejection of the miracles by the Spirit of God.
Judas had a demon, that obsessed him for much time, finally it entered into him, and took total control.
"Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve and one of you is a devil (diabolos, adversary). He spake of Judas Ischariot."
"... after the sop, satan entered into him."
This judas type spirit, is a greedy demon. It seeks to make those it obsesses, or oppresses to be greedy, covetous, self-absorbed, world conscience, prosperity centered, and will betray, sell out, deceive, and lose all spiritual perspective and morality, to achieve gain and carnal mammon.
I John 2:5-16
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world, If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust thereof, but he that doeth the will of God, abideth forever."
I Corinthians 2:12
"Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit Who is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given us of God."
Many in these last days, have had obsession from Judas’ spirits, and are seeking first and foremost, the riches of this world, instead of the riches of heaven. We are warned of the ‘love of money’ being the root of all evil. Prosperity and riches are not the evil, but the love and putting that as first priority, is!
Demonic suggestion, demonic confirming that carnal mammon is what we need... is too common in this age. We were warned of that. The church of Laodicea, which is the most common type of church in the last days, is one that thinks they ‘have need of nothing’, and imagines that the carnal mammon and possessions they have made them rich. But the Lord tells them that they are wretched, naked, destitute and poor in His eyes. Spiritual wealth is not theirs, but carnal mammon is.
We need to discern when a preacher, teacher, etc, speaks from the truth of the Word, or from the obsessing doctrine of a Judas spirit.
In the O.T., the devil copied parts of the true faith, into a religion of his own. He used demons to make it seem powerful and appealing. These ‘religious spirits’ still operate today.
"And shall no more offer their sacrifice unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring..."
"They sacrifice unto devils, not to God, to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not."
"Yea, they sacrificed their sons, and their daughters unto devils."
I Cor. 10:20-21
"But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God, and I would not that ye should have fellowship (koinonos, partnership) with devils. Ye cannot drink of the cup of the Lord, and of the cup of devils, ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils."
Religious demons come to churches, to message boards, and obsess some there, to speak a message that sounds religious, sounds godly, sounds at times loving. But the intent is to disrupt, to hinder revival, to promote false doctrine, to hinder true doctrine.
Religious demons may vary with which religious doctrines they promote, but you will notice that they will not attack the other doctrines, but only the truth of the Lord will be attacked.
Foretelling, prophetic spirits
The girl of Acts 16:16, had a spirit of ‘divination’ (python). Pytho was, according to legend, a huge serpent on Mt. Parnasus, which was a place people went to seek knowledge of the future. Apollos slew the serpent, and was called "Pythius’. From that time, those who predicted future events, were supposed to have the spirit of Apollo Pythius. Here, in the book of Acts, Luke tells us this girl had that divination spirit.
Today, some prophesy things, and the prophecy does not come from the Lord.
Satan himself tried to prophesy in the garden of Eden,
Saul prophesied from the inspiration given him by a demon
(I Sam. 18:8-10).
A familiar spirit imitated Samuel
(I Sam. 28:7-25)
Lying spirits used false prophets in the time of Ahab..
(I Kings 22:6-28)
False prophets prophesied in Jeremiah’s time
(Jer. 23:15-19, 32, 27:9-11, 28:1-17)
False prophets inspired of demons prophesied in Ezekiel’s time
False prophets are to come,
inspired of these foretelling spirits
in the last days.
(I Tim. 4, Matt. 24:1-14, II Thess. 2:8-12, II Pet. 2,
Rev. 13:11-18,. 16:13-15, 19:20, 20:10).
