ENOCH TELLS US MUCH ABOUT THE ANGELS
The Christian world knows very little about angels, on the whole. The world, and even some Christians, think they're "female" and picture them so. Yet, every angel mentioned in Scripture is male. Some think of angels as a tiny cherub shooting arrows at hearts or lovers. Most think of angels as winged creatures, yet only cherubim and seraphim are mentioned as having wings in the Bible.
There is much for man to learn from the Bible about angels. Enoch will also tell us much about angels. If we look in both, we can greatly enrich our meager knowledge on the angelic world.
The Bible indicates three basic types of angels:
- Isa. 6:1-7
- Gen. 3:24, Ezek. 1:5-28, Ezek. 8:1-4, 10:1-22, Rev. 4:6,
5:14, 6:1-8, 7:11, 14:3,9-11, 15:7, 19:4
- mentioned almost 300 times in Scripture.
Enoch also refers to three basic types of angels....
"Around the house were Seraphim, Cherubim, and Ophannim."
"Seraphim" means "the ones that burn."
"Cherubim" means "the ones that proclaim in defense."
"Ophannim" means "those of covered faces," i.e. "the humble ones."
These are all spirit beings, yet they have bodies. These bodies have hands, feet, eyes, heads, voices, hair, and other parts as men have. (Gen. 8:2-8, 19:1-22, Judg. 13:6) We are even advised in Hebrews 13:2 to:"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." So angels can appear so human-like, that we could be easily fooled.
Jacob wrestled with an angel all night. The perverted sinners of Sodom and Gomorrah were anxious to get to the angels that came to rescue Lot and his family. These angels appeared very human-like.
Yet the cherubim and seraphim are not very human-like.
Seraphim... appeared above the throne in Isaiah's vision. Each had 6 wings (two to cover his face, two to cover his feet, and two with which to fly). They shouted "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory". One of these seraphim took a coal from the altar and put it on the lips of Isaiah to cleanse his sin. They handled the coals of fire, like unto their name. "The ones that burn".
Cherubim... are sometimes shown with four faces and four wings. (face of a man, lion, ox, and eagle). They appeared beneath the throne of God in Ezekiel. In Revelation we see 4... each had a different head (one a man, another was a lion, a third like a calf, and the fourth as an eagle). These each had six wings and were full of eyes... they rested not day and night... but continuously cried, "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is and is to come." By this they lived up to their name, for they defended God's holiness by this proclamation.
Common Angels, or Ophannim... in the book of Revelation, surround the throne. (Rev. 5:11) In Enoch71;7, the Seraphim, Cherubim and Ophannim simply stay "near the throne of glory."
We know that the angels of God are organized... having archangels that direct others. Likewise the fallen angels of Satan are also shown to consist of "principalities, powers, rulers of darkness of this world, spirit wicked ones in the heavenlies." (Eph. 6:12) Enoch also tells us of the fallen angels having heads of tens, fifties, and hundreds.
From the Bible we learn of three archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer. Lucifer left his position and rebelled.
We know not any other names of the angels from the Bible. Yet in the book of Enoch others are named.
In Enoch we are told of seven archangels.
"The holy angels that keep watch are these:
(1) Uriel, the holy angel of thunder and shakings,
(2) Raphael, the holy angel that guards the spirits of men,
(3) Raguel, the holy angel who executes vengeance on mankind and fallen angels,
(4) Michael, the holy angel who is guardian of the chosen people of God,
(5) Saragael, the holy angel in charge of spirits of men who cause others to sin,
(6) Gabriel, the holy angel who is in charge of serpents, the Garden, and the cherubim,
(7) Phanuel, the holy angel who is in charge of those who repent unto eternal life."
These seven archangels are the ones given special duties of leadership over other angels ministering to mankind.
The meaning of their names is an interesting study:
Uriel - Flame of God
Raphael - God who heals
Raguel - Friend of God
Michael - Who is like God
Saraguel - Captain of the Lord God
Gabriel - Man of God
Phanuel - Manifestation of God
Many of the Ophannim are protective angels or guardian angels for the righteous. Enoch shows that they are not only to protect and to guard God's children, but also to record every good deed done by the ones they watch. They also list God's reward for that good work. (En.104:1)
When a man goes into sin, that guardian angel becomes an "angel of punishment" Instead of recording the good deeds, that angel now records every sin of that one they watch. (En. 62:11, 63:1, 104:7, 108:7, 98:7, 81:4, Rev. 20:12) So the same angel lists either one's good deeds or one's sins. When one repents, the sins are blotted out.
Angels are able to appear as a burning fire, or as a man.
"Then I was taken to a place where the angels appeared as a burning fire, yet if they desired, could make themselves look as men."
In 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 we read:
"....when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God."
In Hebrews 1:7 we also see:
"And of the angels He saith; Who maketh His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire."
So there seems to exist a harmony of the idea that angels can change appearance. Enoch and the Bible both give support to that theory.
In the Bible we are told a little about the fall of many angels that started some years before the flood.
"And it came to pass when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair: and they took them wives of all which they chose...
There were giants in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men, which were of old, men of renown.
2 Peter 2:4-5 adds some more to this:
"For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment and spared not the old world, but saved Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly"
Jude 6-7 also tells us:
"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them, in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."
And we also are told in 1 Peter 3:19-20:
"By which also He went and preached unto the spirits in prison: which sometime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water."
Enoch gives us more detail about these fallen angels.
"....for since my father Jared's day, the fallen angels have been sinning. They sin and are promiscuous with women. They have begotten children."
"As the sons of men multiplied upon the earth, fair and beautiful daughters were born. The angels of heaven saw and desired them. They encouraged each other to 'come, let us take these daughters of men to beget children for us.' Semyaza, their leader said, 'If you do this deed, I alone will have to answer to God for it.' They all answered him... and said, 'Let us equally take any blame for this and then carry out our plan.' They bound each other to curses to carry out their plan, and share blame for actions. The number that came down to earth to do this were more than 200. They arrived on earth at
the summit of Mt. Hermon. They called this mountain Hermon because it was there they bound one another to sacred curses."
Thus Enoch describes more fully this evil plan of the fallen angels. He goes on to give their leaders' names. En. 6:7 Their sin led to great trouble.
"They each chose a woman, and were defiled with them... The women became pregnant and bore large giants who were extremely tall. The angels begat giants. The giants begat Nephilim, and the Nephilim begat Elioud."
Thus Enoch teaches in harmony to the Bible story, but adds greatly to our knowledge.
The angels in Scripture are all male. God did not create them to reproduce, yet they did possess the power to do so.
"But you were made eternal, immortal for all the ages. So I did not make you to beget children. You were made for heaven, not earth."
"For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven."
The purpose of marriage and the begetting of children is to replenish the earth. Since man is mortal, he needs to bear seed to carry on life. Jesus did not say that angels were sexless - only that they did not need to reproduce to carry on their existence. Adam was created male before Eve was created. God gave Eve to Adam, so that he would not be alone on this earth. Together they beget the first of the ones that now have replenished this earth. The angels have no need to reproduce, since they are eternal. Yet, since they are all male, the possibility to reproduce is there. During Enoch's time, many were "leaving their first estate," and succumbing to temptation.
Then the Lord told Michael: "Go tell Semyaza and those with him who have corrupted themselves with women: 'After you have seen your sons devour each other, you will be bound for 70 generations under the hills of the earth until the day of judgment is come.' On that day of judgment they will be sent into the abyss of fire, and have torment in their eternal prison. Then Semyaza will burn, and see eternal destruction with them."
These angels sought forgiveness but "to whom much is given, much is required." They had seen God, His power, His holiness. They knew their sin, yet they chose to do it anyhow. There is no atoning work to pay for their sins, as God has provided for mankind. Therefore, God gave no forgiveness.
"Enoch, scribe of righteousness, go tell the fallen angels who have sinned with women and have become corrupt, that they will receive neither peace nor forgiveness for their sin."
The fallen angels desired Enoch to intercede to God for them.
"They asked me to write a prayer petition to the Lord asking His forgiveness. They wanted me to deliver it to the Lord ... sat down by the River of Jordan southwest of Mt. Hermon, and I interceded for them until I fell asleep. In a dream-vision, I was told of the wrath of God to come upon the fallen angels...."
Even though I wrote out your petition, the Lord showed me in the vision that it shall not be granted. Complete and final judgment is decreed against you, and you will not have peace. No longer will you be able to ascend to heaven, but you will be bound inside the earth forever. Before you are bound, I will let you see the destruction of those born to you, they will destroy each other in battle."
God then personally told Enoch:
"....tell the fallen angels... You should be interceding for men not asking men to intercede for you... because mankind is mortal, I made them to bear children to sustain life. But you were made eternal... so I did not make you to beget children."
Enoch also was shown the place of eternal torment where these angels will someday be put.
"Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Phanuel will bind them and throw them into the furnace of fire on that day."
Semyaza, the leader of these fallen angels had told the others: "I alone will have to answer to God for it." This is a common thought of people who sin. We feel our sin is "our sin", no one else will suffer from it. Yet it is always untrue.
"No man lives to himself, and no man dies to himself."
Many people paid dearly due to the sin of these fallen angels. The daughters of men they married, the children born to them, the innocents that the giants killed, all who died in the flood that God sent to wipe out this corrupted seed. Our sins have far reaching effects.
The giants that were produced through this union of angels and women of the earth were extremely evil.
The giants then began to devour men. Then they began to devour all kinds of birds, animals, reptiles, fish, and finally each other's flesh, and even drank blood.
Their end came at the time of the flood. Just before the flood, God allowed a war between the giants to occur. They began to kill each other. The flood killed all the remaining giants and their descendants. God didn't want this corrupted seed of mankind to prevent Jesus from being able to come and die for all of mankind by being a direct descendant of Adam. The seed had to remain pure. God found Noah "perfect." The word "perfect" is "tamiym", meaning "bodily perfection", not "moral perfection". That means Noah was directly descended from Adam, without angelic corruption of his seed. So God saved Noah and his family, and wiped out the results of the sins of the fallen angels.
Enoch also tells us that the source of some of the demonic spirits that dwell on earth is the spirits of the giants born to these angels.
Enoch 15;8-12, 16:1
"Now the giants that you have produced will become evil spirits upon the earth, and they will be bound to earth, because they were born from the fallen angels, these will be called spirits of the evil ones. The dwelling place of the spirits of heaven is in heaven, so likewise the dwelling of spirits born on earth - is earth. These spirits of the giants shall attack, fight, break, and cause sorrow. They will eat no food, nor thirst, nor will they be seen. These spirits will be against the men and women of the earth, because they came from them in the day of destruction. When the giants die, their spirits will leave their bodies. Their bodies shall be destroyed until the great judgment day, when their final end and judgment will come."
The source of demonic spirits has always intrigued mankind. Why do they hate men so? Why do they so desperately want to inhabit the body of a person? From where did they come? Why would God create them? Enoch shows an answer to these questions. The angels gave birth to these evil spirits. They had been wicked giant beings who hated mankind, and even each other when they lived. Now their spirits roam the earth. They miss having their own body, so they seek to possess a body. Demonic possession has been a problem of this world for many centuries.
A final problem caused by the fallen angels was the teaching they gave to mankind. These angels came from heaven. The knowledge of heaven surpasses all that mankind has achieved even in our present day. These angels came to earth in those days with that knowledge. They taught some good things, but earlier than when God wanted man to know these things. They also taught some evil things.
"The whole earth has been ruined by the teaching of the works of Azazel."
Azazel taught men to make weapons. What kind of weapons is not clear, but with the knowledge of heaven, he could have taught about weapons we would find more powerful than ones we now know. These weapons in the hands of sinful men, and evil giants is frightening.
Others taught men astrology, portents, spells. God never intended man to delve into powers of these for we are to rely on God and His power. The power of fallen angels, and evil spirits was not to be learned ever. Mankind did.
Penemue taught the art of writing with pen and ink. Why was this evil? Enoch wrote the book we're studying, how could writing be evil? Writing is not evil, nor is the pen, or ink. But in the times of Enoch, God wanted the writing of that day to survive centuries to be handed down for many generations. This paper of this book will be ashes and dust. So God wanted mankind of that day to put their writing on stone, or pottery, or heavy parchment and animal skins. These could survive much longer and be easier to keep. Thousands of years later, we are still finding writings of these ancients. God doesn't mind our writing now in pen and ink, but in that time it was a knowledge too early for God's plan.
The flood destroyed all with those teachings of the fallen angels. Noah and his sons followed God's direction, and God had cleansed the earth of these sinful results of the angelic corruption.
