THE PERSON OF
THE HOLY SPIRIT

Satan has tried to convince the world, and even the church, that the Holy Spirit is a mere influence. The Holy Spirit is a personality. Some, even in Spirit-filled churches ask, "Am I supposed to talk to the Spirit?" We need to study the Person of the Spirit so we may know Him as a Person. We must not neglect a member of the Trinity. He should not be ignored.

The Holy Spirit is mentioned often in the New Testament.

SYNOPTIC GOSPELS               35 TIMES

JOHN                                    44 TIMES

ACTS                                    58 TIMES

ROMANS TO EPHESIANS        95 TIMES

REST OF N.T.                        51 TIMES

                                           ----------

                                           283 TIMES

The Greek word, PARAKLETOS, is used for the Holy Spirit. In the KJV, it is translated "comforter," and "advocate." In the J.B. Phillips translation, it is translated "the One...to stand by you," and "helper." In the Amplified Bible, it is translated as "Counselor."

Jesus is also called a PARAKLETE.

I John 2:1 "IF ANY MAN SIN, WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE (paraklete) WITH THE FATHER--JESUS CHRIST, THE RIGHTEOUS."

Jesus promised that He would send another PARAKLETE.

John 16:7 "...FOR IF I GO NOT AWAY, THE COMFORTER WILL NOT COME UNTO YOU; BUT IF I DEPART, I WILL SEND HIM UNTO YOU.

So now we have two PARAKLETES. One is on the earth with us (the Holy Spirit). The Other (Jesus Christ) is in heaven pleading with the heavenly Father for us. A PARAKLETE is One who stands by us and helps us. The Holy Spirit is first of all a PARAKLETE. As a PARAKLETE, Jesus, stands by the Father and tells Him all about us. Then, as a PARAKLETE, the Holy Spirit stands by us and tells us all about Christ and God and what they want us to know. We have both PARAKLETES working on our behalf.

The Holy Spirit is a person. He is a Divine Person.

He is OMNIPRESENT. Satan is not omnipresent. The angels are not omnipresent. But the Holy Spirit is everywhere, at one time. Therefore, He can be with each of us, at once.

Ps. 139:7-10 "WHERE CAN I FLEE FROM THY PRESENCE...?"

He is OMNIPOTENT. The Holy Spirit is all powerful. This means that the Spirit can give us the power that we need to do the work that God has given us.

Luke 1:35 "THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL COME UPON YOU AND THE POWER OF THE HIGHEST SHALL OVERSHADOW YOU."

He is OMNISCIENT. The Holy Spirit is all-knowing. He knows everything that we need to know, and can share with us the facts needed as we serve the Lord. We walk with One who has all knowledge.

I Cor. 2:9-11 "...NO ONE KNOWS THE THINGS OF GOD, EXCEPT THE SPIRIT OF GOD."

If the Spirit knows all that God the Father knows, then He is all-knowing. Because of His omniscience, He can pray through us for what the Father wills for us.

Romans 8:27 "NOW HE WHO SEARCHES THE HEARTS, KNOWS WHAT THE MIND OF THE SPIRIT IS, BECAUSE HE MAKES INTERCESSION FOR THE SAINTS ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD."

He HEARS and He SPEAKS.

John 16:13 "WHATEVER HE HEARS, HE WILL SPEAK..."

Rev. 2:7 "LET HIM HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT SAYS..."

The Spirit is the voice of the Lord that speaks to us. He even speaks to the spiritually bankrupt, like the church at Laodicea.

Rev. 3:22 "HE THAT HATH AN EAR TO HEAR, LET HIM HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT SAITH UNTO THE CHURCHES."

Our problem is not that the Spirit is not speaking to us, it is that we are not listening to the right station. The Holy Spirit passes on to us all what He hears the Father and Jesus say to us, or about us.

He has FEELINGS.

Ephesians 4:10 "AND DO NOT GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD..."

The Holy Spirit can be hurt deeply. "Grief" is deeper than "hurt."

"Grieve" is the Greek word "loopa." It means "to feel pain in body and mind." The Spirit grieves in an emotional way.

He can be RESISTED. We must beware that we don't grieve Him. We need to get into harmony with the Spirit so we can constantly have His power with us.

Acts 7:51 "YOU STIFFNECKED AND UNCIRCUMCISED IN HEART AND EARS! YOU DO ALWAYS RESIST THE HOLY SPIRIT; AS YOUR FATHERS DID, SO DO YE."

He can be VEXED. The Spirit is a wonderful Friend to have with us, yet, He can become as an enemy if we rebel.

Isaiah 63:10 "BUT THEY REBELLED, AND VEXED HIS HOLY SPIRIT, THEREFORE HE WAS TURNED TO BE THEIR ENEMY, AND HE FOUGHT AGAINST THEM."

He can LEAVE. David prayed in earnest in Psalms 51, that the presence of the Holy Spirit would not be taken from him. We too need to keep our failures forgiven so the Spirit does not leave us.

Psalms 51:11 "DO NOT CAST ME AWAY FROM YOUR PRESENCE, AND DO NOT TAKE YOUR HOLY SPIRIT FROM ME."

If the Spirit is resisted, and vexed, and grieved long enough, He will leave.

Genesis 6:3 "MY SPIRIT WILL NOT ALWAYS STRIVE WITH MAN..."

He bestows LOVE. The love we need for the unlovely, and for the lost, and even for our friends is found as we receive this love from the Source of love, the Holy Spirit.

Romans 5:5 "...THE LOVE OF GOD HAS BEEN POURED OUT IN OUR HEARTS, BY THE HOLY SPIRIT WHO WAS GIVEN TO US."

The Spirit would rather bestow, bless, give and speak--than be grieved, vexed, and depart from you.

He CONVICTS. Even we, as Christians, need to be convicted of sins. If we are not convicted, we will not repent. If we do not repent, we cannot be forgiven. It is essential that we learn to appreciate the fact that the Spirit is constantly with us and He will make us feel convicted for sin. As we get sensitive to His conviction, we will be able to purify ourselves more and more.

John 16:8 "HE WILL REPROVE THE WORLD OF SIN."

He loves to GLORIFY JESUS. The Spirit does not glorify Himself. As we get into closer harmony and fellowship with this Spirit, we also will cease to glorify ourselves. We will glorify Jesus more and more. Those who seek to glorify self, have strayed from the Spirit, for that is not inspired of the Spirit.

John 16:14 "HE SHALL GLORIFY ME..."

He WITNESSES. A constant witness is given by the Spirit to us about our relationship with God. This is one of the most common things you will hear from the Spirit as He speaks to you. You will hear Him assure you of the Lord's love for you.

Romans 8:16 "THE SPIRIT HIMSELF BEARETH WITNESS WITH OUR SPIRIT, THAT WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD."

He DEFENDS. We not only have a guardian angel near us, we also have the Spirit within us to constantly protect us. We as Christians can face any situation without fear. The Omnipotent Spirit is present to defend us.

Isaiah 59:19 "WHEN THE ENEMY COMES IN LIKE A FLOOD, THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD WILL LIFT UP A STANDARD AGAINST HIM."

He GUIDES. Have you ever wonder what to do? when? how? where? There is One who is constantly with us to inform us of God's will for us. We need not be in confusion. If we are in uncertainty, and confusion, then we must have grieved or ignored the speaking of the Spirit.

Romans 8:13-14 "FOR AS MANY AS ARE LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD, THESE ARE THE SONS OF GOD."

He TEACHES. Those who ignore the Spirit are missing the lessons of the greatest Teacher that ever existed. He desires to teach us. We should get into the Word of God which the Spirit has inspired and let the Author explain what He has said in it.

I Cor. 2:12-13 "NOW WE HAVE RECEIVED, NOT THE SPIRIT OF THE WORLD, BUT THE SPIRIT WHO IS FROM GOD, THAT WE MAY KNOW THE THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN FREELY GIVEN TO US BY GOD. THESE THINGS WE ALSO SPEAK, NOT IN WORD WHICH MAN'S WISDOM TEACHES, BUT WHICH THE HOLY SPIRIT TEACHES, COMPARING SPIRITUAL THINGS WITH SPIRITUAL."

He FILLS OUR LIVES WITH SONGS. The Spirit loves music and singing. We should enjoy the melodies that He inspires. Don't sing the songs of the world, enjoy singing about Jesus.

Ephesians 5:18-19 "BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT, SPEAKING TO ONE ANOTHER IN PSALMS AND HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS, SINGING AND MAKING MELODY IN YOUR HEART TO THE LORD."

He MAKES RELATIONSHIP POSSIBLE. The Holy Spirit is needed to unite us to Jesus. The conviction of the Spirit brings us to repentance. Jesus then forgives us, and brings us to the Father. Then we have a relationship with all three of the Trinity. Without the conviction of the Holy Spirit, we would not feel the need of repentance. The closer you are to the Holy Spirit, the more sensitive you will be to the faults, failures and sins in your life. The proud and self righteous reveal by their attitudes that they are not in tune with the voice of the Spirit.

R.A. Torrey, in "The Great Doctrines of the Bible," said:

"If the Holy Spirit is a divine Person and we know it not, we are robbing a divine Being of the love and adoration which are His due,...Many can testify to the blessing that came into their lives when they came to know the Holy Spirit, not merely as a gracious influence, but as an ever-present, loving friend and helper."

Have you robbed this divine Person of the love that is due Him? He is as much a Person as Jesus and the Father. Worship Him. Thank Him for what He is doing for you.

Herbert Lockyer said:

"It is because the church has lost sight of the fact that the Holy Spirit is the Administrator of her affairs in the dispensation of grace, that she is so devoid of spiritual power in a world of need."

If we desire spiritual power, then we must recall that the Spirit is the Source of the power that we should have in this age. To ignore and misunderstand Him, is to lose much of the power that we could have.

We must search the Scripture to learn all we may about this Person, the Holy Spirit. Then we should seek to honor and worship Him as we do the other two members of the Trinity.
