LESSON 5

THE WORLD BECOMES

MORE AND MORE SINFUL

JASHER 2:

1. And it was in the hundred and thirtieth year of the life of Adam upon the earth, that he again knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bare a son in his likeness and in his image, and she called his name Seth, saying, Because God has appointed me another seed in the place of Abel, for Cain has slain him.

2. And Seth lived one hundred and five years, and he begat a son: and Seth called the name of his son Enosh, saying, Because in that time the sons of men began to multiply, and to afflict their souls and hearts by transgressing and rebelling against God.

3. And it was in the days of Enosh that the sons of men continued to rebel and transgress against God, to increase the anger of the Lord against the sons of men.

4. And the sons of men went and they served other gods, and they forgot the Lord who had created them in the earth; and in those days the sons of men made images of brass and iron, wood and stone, and they bowed down and served them.

5. And every man made his god, and they bowed down to them, and the sons of men forsook the Lord all the days of Enosh and his children; and the anger of the Lord was kindled on account of their works and abominations which they did in the earth.

6. And the Lord caused the waters of the river of Gihon to overwhelm them, and He destroyed and consumed them, and He destroyed the third part of the earth, and notwithstanding this, the sons of men did not turn from their evil ways, and their hands were yet extended to do evil in the sight of the Lord.

7. And in those days there was neither sowing nor reaping in the earth; and there was no food for the sons of men, and the famine was very great in those days.

8. And the seed which they sowed in those days in the ground became thorns, thistles, and briers; for from the days of Adam was this declaration concerning the earth, of the curse of God, which He cursed the earth, on account of the sin which Adam had sinned before the Lord.

9. And it was when men continued to rebel and transgress against God, and to corrupt their ways, that the earth also became corrupt.

10. And Enosh lived ninety years and he begat Cainan;

11. And Cainan grew up and he was forty years old, and he became wise and had knowledge and skill in all wisdom, and he reigned over all the sons of men, and he led the sons of men to wisdom and knowledge; for Cainan was a very wise man and had understanding in all wisdom, and with his wisdom he ruled over spirits and demons;

12. And Cainan knew by his wisdom that God would destroy the sons of men for having sinned upon the earth, and that the Lord would in the latter days bring upon them the waters of the flood.

13. And in those days Cainan wrote upon tablets of stone, what was to take place in time to come, and he put them in his treasures.

14. And Cainan reigned over the whole earth, and he turned some of the sons of men to the service of God.

15. And when Cainan was seventy years old, he begat three sons and two daughters.

16. And these are the names of the children of Cainan; the name of the first born Mahalaleel, the second Enan, and the third Mered, and their sisters were Adah and Zillah; these are the five children of Cainan that were born to him.

17. And Lamech, the son of Methusael, became related to Cainan by marriage, and he took his two daughters for his wives, and Adah conceived and bare a son to Lamech, and she called his name Jabal.

18. And she again conceived and bare a son, and called his name Jubal; and Zillah, her sister, was barren in those days, and had no offspring.

19. For in those days the sons of men began to trespass against God, and to transgress the commandments which he had commanded to Adam, to be fruitful and multiply in the earth.

20. And some of the sons of men caused their wives to drink a draught that would render them barren, in order that they might retain their figures and whereby their beautiful appearance might not fade.

21. And when the sons of men caused some of their wives to drink, Zillah drank with them.

22. And the child bearing women appeared abominable in the sight of their husbands, as widows, whilst their husbands lived, for to the barren ones only they were attached.

23. And in the end of days and years, when Zillah became old, the Lord opened her womb.

24. And she conceived and bare a son and she called his name Tubal Cain, saying, After I had withered away have I obtained him from the Almighty God.

25. And she conceived again and bare a daughter, and she called her name Naamah, for she said, After I had withered away have I obtained pleasure and delight.

26. And Lamech was old and advanced in years, and his eyes were dim that he could not see, and Tubal Cain, his son, was leading him and it was one day that Lamech went into the field and Tubal Cain his son was with him, and whilst they were walking in the field; Cain, the son of Adam, advanced towards them; for Lamech was very old and could not see much, and Tubal Cain, his son, was very young.

27. And Tubal Cain told his father to draw his bow, and with the arrows he smote Cain, who was yet far off, and he slew him, for he appeared to them to be an animal.

28. And the arrows entered Cain's body although he was distant from them, and he fell to the ground and died.

29. And the Lord requited Cain's evil according to his wickedness, which he had done to his brother Abel, according to the word of the Lord which He had spoken.

30. And it came to pass when Cain had died, that Lamech and Tubal went to see the animal which they had slain, and they saw, and behold Cain their grandfather was fallen dead upon the earth.

31. And Lamech was very much grieved at having done this, and in clapping his hands together he struck his son and caused his death.

32. And the wives of Lamech heard what Lamech had done, and they sought to kill him.

33. And the wives of Lamech hated him from that day, because he slew Cain and Tubal Cain, and the wives of Lamech separated from him, and would not hearken to him in those days.

34. And Lamech came to his wives, and he pressed them to listen to him about this matter.

35. And he said to them Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice, O wives of Lamech, attend to my words, for now you have imagined and said that I slew a man with my wounds, and a child with my stripes for their having done no violence, but surely know that I am old and grey-headed, and that my eyes are heavy through age, and I did this thing unknowingly.

36. And the wives of Lamech listened to him in this matter, and they returned to him with the advice of their father Adam, but they bore no children to him from that time, knowing that God's anger was increasing in those days against the sons of men, to destroy them with the waters of the flood for their evil doings.

37. And Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, lived sixty-five years and he begat Jared; and Jared lived sixty-two years, and he begat Enoch.

Jasher 2:

2. And Seth lived one hundred and five years, and he begat a son: and Seth called the name of his son Enosh, saying, Because in that time the sons of men began to multiply, and to afflict their souls and hearts by transgressing and rebelling against God.

Some would think this to be in disagreement with Genesis 4:26.

Genesis 4:26 (KJV)

26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

There, if you notice, it says that in the days of Enos, "began men to call upon the name of the Lord." This is a poor translation of the Hebrew, for in the original it says. "then men began to call their gods by the name of Jehovah."

Therefore, we see that Jasher’s account is harmonious with the Bible, and that mankind’s increasing sinfulness is an unfortunate truth.

Seth's lineage was as corrupt as Cain's. When Noah was called to build the ark, he was the only righteous one found in the earth.

Jasher 2:

10. And Enosh lived ninety years and he begat Cainan;

Apostasy began in Seth's line with his first-born. Seth's line was so ungodly by the time of Enoch, that Enoch was prophesying of their destruction:

Jude 14

"And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him."

Jasher 2:

Lamech was the first polygamist, and married Adah and Zillah. Genesis summarizes the whole story of these ones:

Genesis 4:19

"And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah."

These two were granddaughters of Seth. So this is a mixture of the lineage from Cain, and the lineage of Seth. The mixture has tragic results.

Lamech became the second murderer. The details are given in Jasher to complete what little the Bible tells us of that event.

Genesis 4:23-24

"And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech; for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt. If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold."

Jasher 2:

One of the first commandments that men began to disobey was the one to "be fruitful and multiply". This one was disobeyed in the form of drinking something which made them barren. The desire to fill the earth with people took second place to the desire to have wives with a youthful, beautiful appearance.

The de-valuing of human life began millennia ago. It has progressively gotten worse and worse. Today, we find that abortion has surpassed that initial attempt of the devil to stop procreation, to hinder the coming of the Messiah. Now, that the Messiah has come, the devil continues his campaign against procreation, for he wants to hinder more souls being created and to see the return of Jesus and the defeat of the devil.

Human life is unique. We are made in ‘God’s image’ (Genesis 1:26). The animal rights movement wants to put animals and humans on the same level. Yet, in Genesis 9:3-4, mankind is told they may eat animals. In the New Testament, we learn that even those animals that were considered unclean in the Old Testament, can now be cleansed and be eaten. Mankind did not evolve through the animal world, and being unique, we must not take human life lightly.

God encourages procreation.

God forbids murder.

Exodus 20:13

‘Ye shall not murder."

The words ‘innocent blood’ are used 20 times in the Bible, and the unborn child in a womb, is certainly innocent.

Psalm 106:38 (KJV)

38 And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.

That verse shows that the sacrifice of children, as done by the heathen in those times, was condemned. Women that were pregnant would go to the hillsides and offer the contents of their womb to ‘Asherah’ as a sacrifice for her favor. The abortions then were condemned, and that same kind of murder is condemned yet today, by the God Who has not changed His mind.

The early sign in Jasher indicated the emerging of plot of the devil to destroy or hinder the birth of human beings.

Prenatal human life is fully human. God watches over life in the womb:

Psalm 139:13-16 (KJV)

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

Job 10:8-13 (KJV)

8 Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

9 Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?

10 Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?

11 Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

12 Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

13 And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.

Isaiah and Jeremiah speak of God ‘forming’ and preparing ones in the womb. It is not to be considered only a ‘blob’, but it is a human child. The devil has tried and tried to hinder the birth of more humans. Many have fallen in with that plot of the devil, and forgiveness and healing is vital for those failures.

Babies in the womb are distinctive individuals.

Jacob and Esau were distinctive before their birth:

Genesis 25:23 (KJV)

23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

Romans 9:11-13 (KJV)

11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth[wink]

12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.

13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

Samson’s mother was forbidden to drink wine while Samson was yet in the womb, to allow his Nazarite vow to be fully kept:

Judges 13:7 (KJV)

7 But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

Jeremiah was formed by God in the womb, prepared for his great ministry while yet unborn.

Paul claims likewise for himself:

Galatians 1:15-16 (KJV)

15 But when it pleased God, Who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by His grace,

16 To reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

John the Baptist recognized Jesus while both were still in the womb:

Luke 1:41-44 (KJV)

41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

The demonic spirits in this last days are spreading the false doctrine of abortion, just as he spread the seduction of that day. They are seducing many to fall into the lies of abortion dogma.

Lamech’s Deed

Genesis 4:23-24 (KJV)

23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

The summarized story in Genesis 4:23-24 seems to say that Lamech did not purposely slay the man, or the boy mentioned. The explanation given in Jasher seems to indicate that the "wounding" (Genesis 4:23) mentioned was a "petsa" which means in Hebrew "a wound that was split open". This would be consistent with the wound caused by the arrow of Lamech. The "hurt" (Genesis 4:23) is from the Hebrew word "chaburah" which means "a bruising, a black and blue mark" which would also be consistent with the story in Jasher.

Jasher 2:

Cain was killed by the arrow, and Tubal-Cain was killed with the clapping of the hands of Lamech. The clapping of the hands by Lamech seems to have been an indication of sorrow and grieving.

Lamech's speech to his wives seems to be an indicating of the accidental nature of the killings, and that if God would ask for a seven-fold retribution on the one who kills Cain, and Cain had killed Abel purposely, then pleads Lamech: ‘Since I killed accidentally... the retribution for the one who would harm me should be 77 fold.’

WHY DID THESE ANTE-DELUVIANS

(patriarchs before Noah’s flood)

LIVE SUCH LONG LIVES?

Some have suggested the years of the period were months. This is impossible, Enoch, for example, would have been only 5 years old when Methuselah was born.

The life-span of mankind, had there been no fall would have been forever. With the aid of only the leaves and fruit of the tree of life, mankind would have lived forever. The fall kept man from eating of that tree. The curse was progressive, and slowly took effect more and more. The early patriarchs lived for nearly a thousand years. The later men of God lived long lives, but not quite as long as the first men following the fall. Moses lived to 120. Now mankind lives 60 to 90 years. The curse progressively took effect until the Lord stopped its progression.

In these first chapters of Jasher,

and in the first few chapters of Genesis,

there is a definite description

of the effects of the fall of mankind.

1. UPON THE SERPENT

Genesis 3:14 (KJV)

14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

The serpent is cursed more than other animals. No longer do they have legs and stand upright, no longer are they able to speak, and now they crawl upon their bellies, and they eat dust.

2. UPON SATAN

Genesis 3:15 (KJV)

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

There is enmity between God's children and the devil. The Seed of Woman (Jesus Christ) shall someday crush the devil. God's anger toward Satan is very great. The devil has been tormented by this verse of judgment. He tried down through the ages to stop the coming of this "Seed of woman." Yet, he failed.

3. UPON WOMAN

Genesis 3:16 (KJV)

16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

The sorrow and pain of childbirth has been greatly increased for woman.

4. UPON MAN

Genesis 3:17-19 (KJV)

17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Every drop of sweat, every tear, every pain, every sorrow, every death, every heartache, all trace their origin to man's first sin. Man's whole nature has become tainted with sin.

a. Man's spirit is darkened

I Corinthians 2:14

"the natural man receives not the things of God for they are foolishness to him, neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned."

b. Man's soul is debased

Jeremiah 17:9

"The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?"

c. Man's body is diseased and death ridden

Romans 7:24

"O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this body of death?"

d. Man's will is weakened

Romans 7:15

"For that which I do, I allow not, for what I would that do I not, but what I hate, that do I."

Jasher gives us more detail on the effects of the fall, the increasing degeneration of mankind into more and more sin, and more and more regret for the fall.
