Psalm 103:3 (KJV)

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;

We have looked at ‘healing’. We have seen that more than physical healing is needed. In ministry we need to often minister to those physically sick, and spiritually sick. We need a Great Physician to know how to minister to such ailments. We do not have the answers, and in the natural, there is no answer. We need the miracles of the Lord, the wisdom of our God, to even look like we are of any value in this sick world. The Great Physician wants to have a relationship with those in ministry. He can do the surgeries, and remove the cancers of sin, and heal the body too of its ailments of the curse.

That relationship with the Great Physician is vital. If we stray from hearing His voice, or His Written Word, we will soon be ‘witch doctors’ rather than messengers of the Great Physician. We need to love and adore, appreciate and bless the Great Physician.

Notice in Psalm 103 that five times it tells us to ‘bless the Lord’. We often think of the Lord blessing us, but the Lord often has commanded in His Word that we ‘bless’ Him. We are to make the Lord happy, show our appreciation to Him with praise and worship. This is a relationship with God that is two ways, not one way. Many want to receive from the Lord, want blessings from Him, want assurances from Him, want to see Him working in our lives. That is fine, as long as we remember this is a two way blessing that God wants, He wants us appreciating Him, choosing to spend time with Him, listening to His directions, following those directions, learning to think about things as He thinks.

The ‘wretched man’ in us wants to please self, wants to gain all sorts of things that God says are unnecessary or wrong. The spirit that was resurrected in us when we were ‘born again’ wants to bless the Lord. The inner struggle of whose blessing we seek is there in each of us.

The discussion has been on ‘healing’. The work of ‘healing, (inside and outside, i.e. spirit, soul, and body healing) is to be done by the Great Physician. This work of healing is done by our Lord. He is the Great Physician, and we need to trust Him when He says we need a medicine, or a surgery. He is the One Who will tell us what the problem is, what the answer to that problem is. Many want to self diagnose. Some try to change or update the diagnosis of the Great Physician. Many want to avoid spiritual surgery. We can trust the Great Physician. Read this Psalm and see why.

Psalm 103:1-22 (KJV)

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.

6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

9 He will not always chide: neither will He keep his anger for ever.

10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward them that fear him.

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions from us.

13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

14 For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.

15 As for man, His days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so He flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and His righteousness unto children's children;

18 To such as keep His covenant, and to those that remember His commandments to do them.

19 The LORD hath prepared His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all.

20 Bless the LORD, ye His angels, that excel in strength, that do His commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye His hosts; ye ministers of his, that do His pleasure.

22 Bless the LORD, all His works in all places of His dominion: bless the LORD, O my soul.

Notice the "Who healeth all thy diseases." (vs 3). There are physical sicknesses from which God can heal. There are also many spiritual ailments in us, from which we need God’s healing.

We are all suffering from the disease of sin, from diseases caused by this sinful adamic nature. With great comfort to know the kind of Great Physician described in Psalm 103, we can know He is able and willing to heal us.

Sometimes the Great Physician looks at us, and sees our physical ailments, but sees in us a greater sickness, that He chooses first to work on, before He heals the physical. Sometimes the inner spiritual ailments are the reason for the physical ones. But, we need to trust the Great Physician to make His diagnosis, and trust His plan for our healings. His cures are are radical—He strikes at the real disease, and His cures are well planned. The Great Physician never fails if we follow His plan, take His medicine, allow His surgeries.

The Great Physician creates new hearts for those of evil thinking, or of wrong passions. He makes us new creations. He puts a right spirit within us.

The Great Physician is well skilled and knowledgeable of all the diseases of mankind. Physicians of our world generally have some speciality. They are human and can mis-diagnose and slip with their scalpel at times. Although they may know a bit about pains and ills, there is a limit to their ability. Jesus Christ is thoroughly acquainted with the whole of creation, and knows the human soul, spirit and body, and sees the interrelationship of all those parts.

The Great Physician knows the sinner and saints. He sees the human frailties and weaknesses. He knows our past histories, our hurts, our wounds of life, our ailments from the curse on this world. He sees our aging, and our refreshment. This Great Physician knows us so well, that it is not just our blood pressure or cholesterol level that He knows, but He also knows the number of hairs on our head at any given moment. He knows the source of our ailments, and the cure. He is adept at spiritual surgery on our souls. With a glance of His eyes, He knows how to treat the patient.

There is no brokenness of man’s soul which the Great Physician cannot bind up. "He cleanseth from all sin" we are told. We can joyfully put ourselves in His hands. We trust Him and His surgery can remove the cancers from our souls. We can love our Great Physician for He brings grace (undeserved favor). He also brings strength and wisdom, to correct the thinking and natural desires that led us into states of sickness.

There is in each of us, in the natural, an evil heart of unbelief, an evil and unbelieving heart. This needs surgery. An unbelieving heart is the cause of apostasy, and worked the ruin of all, from Adam to us. The beginning of all sin and sickness was a want of confidence in the Lord God.

This lack of confidence and relationship with the all knowing, all loving, all sufficient Great Physician produces great difficulty on earth, and has produced all the ills that man has ever suffered.

A lack of confidence in the words of God led to the first sins of Adam and Eve. This lack of knowing and trusting the Great Physician still leads to every other sin, and will continue to produce the same effects to the end of the world.

The Bible says that this heart of unbelief is "evil." Some who lose fellowship with the Lord, neglect to read His message in the Bible, become distracted from the gentle speaking of His Spirit to us, get into a thinking of self medication, self surgeries, or neglect of the ailments that God is trying to tell them need spiritual surgery.

Men often feel that it is a matter of little consequence whether they call sin to be sin or not. They think that they have superior love, so they will not preach that homosexuality is sin, or that abortion is murder, or that lying is evil, or that greed is carnal, etc. They cease to hear the diagnosis of the Great Physician, and begin to hear the diagnosis of the world. The peer pressures of the world want to make us take their diagnosis of sin. They have called ‘good to be evil, and evil to be good’ for so long that even some Christians take their diagnosis of sin and evil, and make it their own.

What the Bible (the message of the Great Physician) says is of little consequence to some. They discount it, they twist it, they say it is out-dated, and they miss then the prescription of the Great Physician for the ills of this

How can we ‘bless the Lord’ if we doubt His prescription for the ills of our bodies and souls? What peace can we truly have if we lack confidence in the kind of God described in Psalm 103.

In departing from the Great Physician, the heart, the mind of man, has become deceived. In trying to minister to others, how can we give the prescription of the Great Physician, if we have lost contact with Him, or have lost confidence in His Written Prescription called the Bible?

All sin first exists in the heart, and then is manifested in the life. If we preach a message not found in the Word of God, we preach something that causes disease and death. We cannot indulge in unbelief. We need to remember that this Great Physician, Who healeth all our diseases, knows the sicknesses and the cures for all sickness and sin.

Jeremiah 2:13 (KJV)

13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

When we forsake the ‘living waters’, the healing message of God, and hew out psychological babel of human wisdom, we will then trust the surgery of mankind on things mankind does not truly understand as does the Lord. Psychology based and founded in the Word of God can be useful, but the Great Physician’s advice, and His prescription needs to be followed.

Some will think that ‘love’ makes all sin to be excused by God. God still is teaching in His Word that someday sin will be judged. Murder is still murder. Theft is still theft. God wants to do spiritual surgery on sinners, remove the evil, change the thinking, restore fellowship with God. Therefore, those who say that to call certain sins to be still sins, makes one a ‘false’ Christian is tantamount to breaking from the real teachings of the Great Physician. There is no surgery man can do to make the sinner less guilty. There is no bandage of false teaching that can eliminate the cancer that needs the surgery of the Great Physician. We do not have the answers to mankind’s ills, but we should know the Great Physician Who does.

Mark 7:20-23 (KJV)

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mankind is sick with many things that have defiled his soul and his body. These sins are still sin. They still defile in our age. To preach that God will not judge those sins, if they are not surgically removed by the Great Physician is wrong.

The One ‘Who healeth all’ also is the One Who can ‘forgive, remove sin, renew and redeem’ (as shown in Psalm 103).

I read the other day of one minister who said that to cure the sin of homosexuality we need a ‘thousand mile electric fence’ to wipe out the homosexual. I am thankful to the Great Physician that He has not dealt with my many failures by killing this patient rather than spiritual surgery to remove the cancers of sin. That diagnosis of that preacher mentioned did not come from the Bible. God is not willing that any perish.

Some other preachers try to do their own diagnosis, and try to say that homosexuality is not sinful, not to be judged, is normal and good. That diagnosis may get them a pat on the back from the devil, but it is not gotten by fellowship with the Great Physician, for the Bible shows us clearly, very clearly, that the sin of homosexuality is a ‘reprobate mind’ and must be dealt with by the loving, forgiving, merciful, and gracious Great Physician.

Both extremes of false diagnosis of sin are harmful. Only surgery performed on the sinner, done only by the Great Physician, is the cure. To try to find another way, another cure, is impossible. We, as ministers, are here to point mankind to the revelation of spiritual sickness, and to the only Physician Who can bring healing from that which is sin.

The proud gossip of the church who criticizes everyone but the one sitting in the pew behind the person in front of them, never sees his or her own sin. The unforgiving church member who can list multiple reasons for not forgiving someone who wronged them, seems to expect God to forgive their sins so easily.

The removal of the splinter in another’s eye, is easy to try to do, while still letting the log in one’s own eye remain.

The Great Physician has given us a written diagnosis of what is spiritual sickness, what will kill us if we do not have it removed. We need to study that written diagnosis, and also read the prescription He has given for its removal, cure.

To ignore or condone what God calls sin, makes ministers unable to work with the Great Physician to bring on His surgeries. A person hit by a truck, lying in the road hurting and dying, needs a physician, not a diagnosis of ‘you only feel hurt because someone told you that you were.’ No, they need a hospital. They need a diagnosis of truth. They need help.

The truth for sin is in the Word of God. The Great Physician is anxious to help. The message needs proclaimed by His ministers. Some will mock, some will try to up-date the eternal Word of God. Some will get angry and attack those pointing mankind to the Great Physician Who has the answer, the spiritual surgery that sin and spiritual sicknesses need.

In far too many churches of our time, we have humans trying to diagnose, treat, and cure those with spiritual ailments. Some tell the sinners that God will not condemn them. Some tell the sinners that their sin is not sin, it is good. Some will try to do the surgery themselves, by telling them ‘not to feel guilty, it is normal’. Those human physicians are doing evil to their patients.

The Great Physician has given a Written diagnosis for us to know what is spiritual sickness (sin and its effects), and to know what is the needed help we need from Him. Too many want to write their own list of sicknesses. They want to remove certain sins from God’s list. They think that this will make them not be ‘sick’ by such removed sins. They are wrong.

The Holy Spirit convicts of sins, even the ones we do not want to admit are sins. The greed of Judas led to greater sins. He finally betrayed the Lord in search of money.

1 John 1:6-10 (KJV)

6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

This denial of sin, this ‘walk in darkness’ and in blindness to the sicknesses of sin in lives does not make people to be superior Christians. It makes them to be liars before God. There is a great need for ministers to preach the Word, identify sin, and let the Holy Spirit work.

The Holy Spirit is working, working to get people to confess their own sins, and know the truth of what is sin. If they do not, the sickness grows within them. The convicting power of the Spirit makes them angry in their battle against Him.

One example in our time is the current battle of homosexuals to stop the preaching that it is a sin. The Bible is clear, it is sin. But the battle to stop it from being preached is on going. No, I do not believe God hates them, I am sure He loves them as much as He loves me. But that does not make their sin to be righteousness, it is still sin. We need to preach it is sin, and preach how God can deliver them from that reprobate mind. The Great Physician can still work upon them, do surgery on that reprobate mind, and bring them into the family of God.

Though 82% of evangelicals know the Bible teaches it is sinful, the push is on going to try to make them allow homosexual marriage, to stop preaching that it is a sin, and to look at any who will not do those things to be in a ‘fake religion’ and only ‘so called Christians.’ No, I am not just a ‘so called Christian’, and my religion is not ‘fake’. I am one who knows that if we call sin to be good, no one would go to the Great Physician to get the cure He has for sin. If they do not know it to be sin, their souls are doomed due to not repenting, not finding the Surgeon of heaven Who can bring them redemption.

The Great Physician can bring healing to those hurting from the effects of their sins. Murderers who sit on death row, knowing they are guilty of killing someone’s son, someone’s father, someone’s husband, can be torn by guilt and shame as they prepare to leave this world. The Great Physician can bring healing to that guilty soul, bring peace that passes all understanding. The Great Physician can lift up the fallen spirit, and bring true healing.

Ministers of the gospel, who want to share healing with this world, need first to know the Great Physician, know His written Diagnosis of sin (the Bible), and be able to share His definition of sin and sickness of the spirit, so that He can do His work upon this dying world.
